Berea, Ohio
The idea began over two years ago. Dr. Brian Krupp of Baldwin Wallace wanted to engage his computer science class to create apps that tackle real-world challenges. His students were more than up for the challenge.
It is well known, that Baldwin Wallace has taken the lead in minimizing the waste produced on its campus. Despite this, many events produce large amounts of food that were simply put in the trash. At the same time, the university conducted a study that found 28% of the students were food insecure.
Was it possible to solve two problems at the same time? Dr. Krupp called on his students to find a solution. The students created “Campus Plate” an App that linked food service to students.
When the college hosted events and had extra food, staff would break it up into individual servings and put it in refrigerators around campus. The app notified students of leftovers, who could reserve a meal and pick it up from the fridge.
The Campus Plate App was only part of the project. For the app to work, logistics needed to be solved, refrigerators purchased, and a marketing plan put in place. Dr. Franklin Lebo, co-director of BW’s sustainability program, worked with his students to secure a grant from the EPA and address the practical needs of the project.
Currently, the program has three refrigerators to hold the food and an eager group of ‘test’ students. The program will continue to expand. There are plans to market this concept and the app to other Universities.
