The Story of the Greatest Wealth Transfer in History– $21 Trillion Stolen from Working Families and Handed to the Wealthiest 34,000 Americans

“Every spring, they came to my small tax office in Ohio carrying manila folders stuffed with W-2s and receipts. Working families, retirees, small business owners—all making their annual pilgrimage to fulfill their government’s requirement to report their income and fund the workings of society.”– Mark Dent, Berea Author

These are the first lines of a new book written by Berea Author, Mark Dent. Dent is a Berea tax preparer whose office sits above Huntington Bank on the town square. From his window, he can see the clock tower with its green roof and the steady flow of cars heading home from Giant Eagle.

Why did a numbers guy decide to write a book? Ask him, and he’ll tell you about the moment that started it all—twelve years ago, when three teenage girls walked into his office wearing hoodies that read Midnight Cleaners. They had started their own cleaning business.

Sarah, the youngest of the three, was the natural leader—a high school soccer player with dirty blond hair and a knack for organization. She found the clients, kept the records, and managed the money. Each of the girls earned around $10,000 that year. With her income from waiting tables, Sarah’s tax return showed $14,000 in total earnings.

Dent prepared her return. She owed $247 in income tax. But as he looked at her pay stubs and receipts—Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes, sales tax, gas tax, and the countless other ways government extracts revenue—he wondered: How much did she actually pay?

After collecting a bit more information about her living expenses, he started calculating. When he finished, he realized Sarah had paid over $7,000 in taxes of various kinds—roughly 50% of everything she earned.

Something Didn’t Add Up

It didn’t match the story he grew up hearing. Dent had served as a young Republican committee member and was told for years that the wealthy carried the tax burden while the poor received too much. The numbers on Sarah’s return told another story.

If this wasn’t true, he wondered, what else wasn’t true?
What other assumptions, repeated for decades, would collapse under scrutiny?

Over the next twelve years, the Berea author listened to hundreds of clients describe how they viewed the country’s direction. Some concerns were financial, but many reflected something deeper—the erosion of community, the decline of civility, and a growing sense of being cut out of decisions that shaped their lives.

People weren’t simply frustrated by rising prices or stagnant wages. They were uneasy because the institutions they once trusted had stopped acting like they belonged to them.
And they were angry at all politicians, Republican and Democrat. Broken promise after broken promise. A political elite that worked for billionaires and trillion-dollar corporations, not for ordinary citizens. They were betrayed.

Dent read books, or more specifically, listened to audiobooks on the topic. The information was there, but the dense jargon, academic distance, and complex explanations made them painful to listen to. Obsessively accurate, but books were for academics in ivory towers.

The story of our time needs to reach all of us, not just those in ivory towers. Dent attempts to tell the story from the vantage point of an average person. No jargon, condescension, and without the partisan spin. Whether he succeeded will be for readers to decide.

Where to Find the Book

His book, released December 10th, pulls no punches. It calls out both Republicans and Democrats for failing to live up to their promises. It blends historical-fiction short stories with straightforward nonfiction analysis, offering readers a way to understand what has happened over the last forty-six years—and why so many Americans feel disconnected from the country they thought they knew.
