Berea’s North End Foundation

Berea, Ohio

What happens when an engaged citizen reaches out to his community? Here in Berea, the result was the North End Foundation.
Reverend Leroy McCreary wanted his congregation to put in to action the words preached from his pulpit. In 2006 he met with a small group from his congregation and asked what they could do to improve their community. What they have done is nothing less than amazing.
They organized high school students to help the elderly and others in need of yard work; by taking care of their community, they taught job skill to these young men and women. They networked to secure laptop computers, printers, and other hardware to reduce the digital divide. These resources were provided to families, students, and the elderly. In addition to this access, the North End Foundation also provides training and resources on how to use these computers.
The impact has been immeasurable. Just ask Avril Sutherland. Avril has lived in Berea since 1955. During her time living in Berea, she served on the volunteer police force and was a bus driver for 40 years. Now retired, Avril had trouble mowing her lawn. Avril spent days trying to find someone to help her out. She reached out to the city of Berea and was turned down. Avril did not qualify for their assistance. After many phone calls, someone mentioned to Avril that a Reverend McCreary might be able to help her out.

Avril called Reverend McCleary. It took about an hour, but he had a team of students and a supervisor to take care of her lawn. Avril will tell you that they did a fantastic job, and her yard looks great. They continue to come back and make sure she is taken care of.

The North End Foundation is simply a neighborhood organization that takes care of its community. If you would like to learn more or donate, you can visit them at www.northendfoundation.org.

Mark Dent

Hello! My name is Mark, I'm a Berea resident and owner of the Law Office of Mark Dent. I’ve been preparing estate plans since 2003 when I served in the Army as a JAG Attorney. I’m a graduate of Ohio Northern Law School and have bachelor's degrees in both Political Science and Computer Science. My wife and I enjoy running 5ks and exploring the Metro Parks. I am located around the corner from Dick’s Bakery, which I blame for my poor run times and an extra 5 pounds around my midsection. Unfortunately, their donuts are some of the best Ohio has to offer!
