In an era where community and educational excellence go hand in hand, a unique team emerges to represent the Berea School District. Introducing the ‘Tri-City Ticket’—Cori Farris from Middleburg Heights, Katie Michal from Brook Park, and Rick Mack from Berea. These three candidates bring a depth of experience as educators, parents, and community leaders.

Cori Farris: A Proven Leader from Middleburg Heights

Cori Farris isn’t just another name on the ballot; she’s a mom, an educator, and a tireless advocate for the schools that nurtured her own kids—Benjamin and Olivia, both proud Berea-Midpark High School graduates. With a long history of civic engagement, Cori has served on various boards and even spearheaded the 2016 bond issue that led to the construction of new schools. Notably, she serves as a trustee of the Berea Schools Education Foundation, a role that allows her to directly influence the district’s educational standards.

Her tenure as the current president of the Berea City School District is marked by her collaborative approach. She firmly believes that leadership is a collective responsibility, saying, “We will all work together to see things through.” Cori is deeply committed to transparent governance and making sure residents and parents have their voices heard.

Katie Michal: The Teacher-Parent from Brook Park

As a longtime resident, district graduate, and mother of three youngsters attending Berea City School District schools, Katie Michal offers a unique trifecta of perspectives. She’s not just a community member; she’s a parent and an art teacher in a neighboring district with 13 years of classroom experience.

Katie emphasizes her desire to represent Brook Park effectively, stating, “We need all three communities represented.” She’s driven by the belief that education is society’s backbone and sees her teacher-parent role as ideal for influencing positive change. “Our district has seen an improvement in test scores since they dropped during the pandemic, but there is more work to be done,” she affirms.

Rick Mack: Berea’s Dedicated Educator and Community Member

Rick Mack’s journey to the board wasn’t smooth sailing; he narrowly lost an election and was later appointed due to an unforeseen vacancy. However, adversity only strengthened his resolve. With over 37 years of experience in the district, Rick has served as an Intervention Specialist, Special Needs Curriculum Leader, and even a coach. He continues to mentor former athletes and others entering various fields, showcasing his long-lasting influence on the community.

Rick’s focus rests on strategic planning, data analysis, and providing opportunities for all students. He remains unflinchingly optimistic, even in challenging times, and aims to tackle the district’s issues head-on. “Our students are our greatest resource, and they always rise to meet new challenges,” he says.

United for Our School District

All three candidates are committed to high instructional standards, advocating for innovative learning environments and what’s best for our children. Their community roots are deep, representing Middleburg Heights, Brook Park, and Berea—showing that they are truly your hometown leaders for a united district. They are tested and trusted figures with proven leadership and vision.

Hello! My name is Mark, I'm a Berea resident and owner of the Law Office of Mark Dent. I’ve been preparing estate plans since 2003 when I served in the Army as a JAG Attorney. I’m a graduate of Ohio Northern Law School and have bachelor's degrees in both Political Science and Computer Science. My wife and I enjoy running 5ks and exploring the Metro Parks. I am located around the corner from Dick’s Bakery, which I blame for my poor run times and an extra 5 pounds around my midsection. Unfortunately, their donuts are some of the best Ohio has to offer!
